LIFEGUARD COURSES

National Lifeguard (NL)

  • Develops lifeguarding knowledge, judgment, skills and fitness

  • Focuses on prevention through active surveillance and water safety education

  • Emphasizes lifeguarding skills and decision-making processes

  • Builds on team communication and multi-guard roles

  • Requires 400m swim in under 10 minutes

  • Builds on physical skills

  • Can lead to job and leadership opportunities

Please note the course prerequisites of Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid. Standard First Aid is a different accreditation than Emergency First Aid, often taken with the Bronze program. Please check that your award is for the Standard First Aid. Should you need to earn this certification, please refer to the First Aid Programs section.

Prerequisite:

15 years of age, Bronze Cross Certification and Standard First Aid with CPR/C (need not be current).

Candidate recognition

National Lifeguard certification card valid for 24 months.

National Lifeguard Recertification

  • For National Lifeguard-Pool certified candidates needing recertification

  • Skills are demonstrated in an exam setting

  • Candidates respond to situations as a single guard and member of a guard team

  • Exam includes object recovery, sprint, and management of various victim types

  • Requires a 400m timed swim in under 10 minutes

  • Certification valid for 2 years
